All Our Dead

Some random musings from church.

I love love love the song, "High On A Mountain Top," but I hate that it ends on the word dead. I don't think any song should end on the word dead. Even though it is a "happy dead," really no dead is a good dead. It's like a really good meal that leaves a bad aftertaste.

For once we had a good combined 5th Sunday meeting and it was all about being good visiting/home teachers. I could improve for sure, and so could Jeff, but I gotta say I'd bet a thousand bucks that our home teachers that we have had for like three years couldn't tell you my kids names. I always get above average visiting teachers though.

So my freshman high school English teacher was a real jerk! I hated this class and the teacher but one day he said something that I always think about. He was an avid people watcher and pointed out that if you watch people you tend to notice that more often then not the listener isn't really listening at all but just waiting to say their part. I have noticed this in others and myself. I am so so guilty of this at times. I recently had a very important conversation with someone in my ward, "(or at least I thought it was important,) and I gotta say that as I was listing my concerns I could see this firm steel wall in this ladies eyes. She was not listening to me at all. She knew what she was gonna say and was not hearing me at all. I almost wish she would have said that from the beginning, but that would have been really rude.

I love the classic lines of our church building, over all it is a lovely building where the Spirit is in abundance, but I need to be honest and say I really hate that Burgundy color of all the benches and seats.

Tee hee hee. I have brought treats for the Library the past few weeks and today when the Bishop came in he said I was magnifying my calling.

My friend Krista teaches Relief Society once a month and it is becoming my favorite week of the month. Her lessons are so touching without any gimmicks or tears. I feel really blessed to have her as a teacher since I am not getting to much out of Sacrament Meeting and I end up in the Library for much of Sunday School.

Mae goes into Nursery in March. I have been counting down for a year now.

Arg! So we now have sisters instead of elders and I want to have them over for dinner, but they don't pass around the calender anymore. Now I was told by the sisters this is because they were in such high demand that the calender was getting full before it got around. Okay, fair enough, but the solution was that the ward mission leaders wife now controls the dinners. NOT COOL! I have to call this chick up and what be deemed worthy to fill a slot? This is WAY WEIRD! It kinda reminds me of last Christmas when we had signed up to feed the elders on Christmas Eve and then got booted very rudely by another family who had a tradition of feeding the elders on Christmas Eve. Yeah well if it was that important then they should have signed up first! We were totally dumped by the elders to accommodate this family. Yeah I am still way mad. But anyway, I feel this is really uncomfortable and so I will probably not get to feed the sisters while they are here, which is sad cause I really loved having them here.

I hate when people ask me to cut strips of paper for them with the paper cutter. I have a HUGE phobia of paper cutters. My parents worked with a family business for many years durning my childhood and we were often in the office. My mom made a big deal about how dangerous they were and well, it stuck. Does anyone else remember a Josh Harnett horror movie called The Faculty? Well I didn't see it, but I remember the trailer where someone grabbed the blade off of one of those things and used it all machette like. I can't use them. If you need something cut please come and do it yourself.

If the sisters are in such high demand that the calendar is fillng up quickly, that should be a RED FLAG to whoever is in charge of the last year's worth of elders we've had. There were plenty of spots of the calendars to feed them, and I know why. hahaha!
My favorite was the one that wanted to hear all of our baby names when I was pregnant with corbin. During the (endless) name bashing session, I called Quincy back into the room. He mis-heard me and thought I was saying "Quincy" as a suggestion (as opposed to a name we'd already selected for another child). He quickly jumped in and said, "Oh! Don't name your kid Quincy. That's just ugly!"

Hey, just wanted to tell you that I read your blog all the time and can rarely comment because I am almost always holding a baby at the time. I tried to vote for you in the photo contest, but there was no like button! I read others had the same problem -- don't know what happened there, but it was probably a conspiracy. :) Glad you guys won anyway!

And I can't believe what the above commenter said about the elders hating that name. That is a great story.

Totally agree with what your English teacher said. I have major problems with that as well. My mom always tried to teach me "Seek first to understand, then to be understood." It's so hard!

you should talk to the nursery leaders if Mae gets to be a handful. Maci was crazy, (she was walking at 12 months and running at 13) and wouldn't sit still, bored with books and baby toys. We talked to the nursery leaders, and they were more than happy to take her off our hands at 15 months. They said that if she was a hassle for us in RS and SS then she's more than welcome in Nursery so we can focus on our classes, and not on entertaining our child. So hopefully you'll have a wonderful nursery leader too. (and while living w/ my parents, we were the nursery leaders, and we let the triplets come in at 15 months, b/c they were all walking and it didn't make sense to not let them in!)

@Jenn, no worries. Glad you like the blog. I can be really bad about commenting too. I don't mind if people don't comment, I just do the contests once and a while cause 1. It is fun and 2. It gives me a good idea of who reads my blog. If I know then I can somewhat cater/not offend some people. I am a huge fan of your blog. And one day when I have money I am gonna buy lots of Andrew's prints. Sadly my powerball ticket didn't win this weekend.

@Katie. Our jr. Nursery leaders are awesome, but believe it or not our ward is so huge that they have three nurserys! And all are to crowded! We are busting at the seams here in Northwest Arkansas. We could totally give any Utah ward a run for their money. So I just count down til March.

I got a voice mail a week or so ago, asking if we could feed the sister missionaries, but I never called back. How about I sign up and give them YOUR address?? Haha. That would be awesome! (not that I have anything against feeding the sister missionaries...I've just been busy and out of town.)

Emily, I'm glad you like Andrew's photography. He's got a bunch of new ones he's editing now that we're really excited about. I don't know if I ever thanked you for posting his Provo temple pic and link to his site. I know it's no Powerball winning ticket, but you can have 30% off any of his pics you want. :)

@Jenn, true it may not be powerball but I'll take it. I have been tempted to get the one of the mt timp temple since that is where we got married. Maybe for our next anniversary.

@Kasey, Thanks. You've probably heard from Meg that I was called and I got a few appointments set up for the next few months. It was still REALLY WEIRD. I was given some bizzare excuse that I still don't think makes any sense. They are covering something, but maybe it is for the safety of the sisters or something. I don't know. WEIRD. It is a good thing it's the sisters cause I wouldn't do this for elders.

I'll take that challenge. We have 4 nurseries in my ward. Our first Sunday here they did 4 (yes FOUR) baby blessings, and that is typical. We have to duke it out in the mothers' room. Gotta love young wards though!
