TTMG XI.2

Okay I can't believe I forgot the one that made me want to do this edition in the first place!

5. 24th of July Celebrations outside of Utah: The 24th of July celebrates the pioneers reaching Utah. I have no problem with that, good for them. Yay Pioneers! But it just feels weird to celebrate it when you don't live there. I am pro pioneers and yes, I know it is supposed to be called Pioneer Day. But I don't know it is just weird to me. Maybe I am just bugged cause I got roped into making either coleslaw or potato salad (two of the most disgusting dishes EVER!) for the stupid celebration here. WE LIVE IN ARKANSAS! We should not be celebrating this. In fact it was the Arkansan settlers that were killed by the Mormon Pioneers at the Mountain Meadows Massacre, so even more awkward. No one but the Hawaiians celebrate King Kamaeamaeh Day.

What!?! I am all for a day of celebration of any kind. Just ask Brian. But, yeah in Utah is was awesome because its just like the 4th of July with fireworks and all. Plus, we loved going to the parade. Although, last year it was brutally hot.

I think if you are FROM Utah, or are a direct descendant from Pioneers, it's still ok. Like the Hiatts--Rachelle is from Utah, and she makes it a tradition to cut the power on the house on the 24th and make the kids learn how to live without it for a day, to appreciate their heritage (and modern technology). They cook dutch oven dinner over coals on the driveway, and the boys have to go without video games for the day.
Who's celebrating? Is there a parade? Can't beat the people watching at a parade.

I'm a 'Daughter of a Utah Pioneer' so I celebrate regardless of where I live...but I don't go without power or cook my dinner in a dutch oven. That's HARD core! ;)
